Looking for Carnevale
I still vividly remember the first time I saw Zefferelli’s Romeo and Juliet as a young high school student. I was hooked, the scenery, the music, the story, and the costumes. Watching from the safety of his mask Romeo falls in love with Juliet, sigh. It also didn’t hurt that I had a huge crush on my English Literature teacher at the time!
As I got older the theme of the masquerade stayed with me. For my sixteenth birthday my Mother gave me a simple china mask which I had hanging in my room and then in our daughters. Even though I have been to Venice a number of times I am yet to experience Carnevale. I have planned the journey many times and something has always conspired to keep me from Venice at just that moment in time.
Although the costumes are glorious it is the masques that fascinate me, the thought of keeping your identity hidden. In Venice there are a multitude of shops selling the most incredible masks, a young girls dream. Now many years from girlhood with children of my Carnevale on my mind. I think some “serious girl time” with Carina slowly wandering through the tiny back streets and into Piazza San Marco, our masks in place will go on my wish list.
We were once swept away she and I in a parade through the streets at night in Italy. All around us people held candles and we were carried along behing the statue of the Madonna hoisted high on the shoulders of young men. It was intense, so rich with emotion, color and passion. There is no feeling quite like it, an Italian festival. History, pageantry and the richness of life all come together in that one moment.

Hi Lisa,
Thats incredible – I never realised that there were shops with masks in them! I love Romeo and Juliet – the love story is incredible! How funny – you had a crush on your English Teacher – I had a crush on my french teacher…but I think that he was gay!! At least that is what it sounded like when we listened to his stories, but gee was he hot 🙂
Love how you and Carina get to have girly time shopping!
Cheers
Lisa
Lisa you would just love Venice. The labyrinth of spiderweb streets, tiny shops packed with treasures. My English Lit teacher was certainly not hot, but when he talked about the classics I was hooked. I had crushes on most of my teachers, must be a thing for older men??
xx
So true about the shops in Venice with the masks, I wish I had bought one, but I didn’t see the purpose, apart from putting it on show. That’s it! A trip to Venice is required – during carnival preferably!
Cathy absolutely a trip to Venice…maybe next February!! There are many different Carnevale’s throughout Italy so I plan to visit more than one. Have you been to any other big festivals?
ciao lisa x
Hi Lisa, I think you already know from FB that I am back from my travels. So now trying to catch up with all my favourite bloggers. What a lot of interesting posts to welcome me back to your blog this evening, this challenge is certainly keeping you busy.
Why thank you so much Linda, I haven’t been to Hong Kong but my parents went and loved it. I am so enjoying the challenge and getting into a rhythm with it now. I hope I am not driving my readers mad with all the posting. It’s taught me that I don’t have to worry so much about getting it right, just write from the heart and the rest follows.
ciao and welcome back
